Eltrombopag Olamine is an oral medication used to treat thrombocytopenia (low platelet count) in patients with chronic immune thrombocytopenia (ITP), severe aplastic anemia, and chronic hepatitis C–associated thrombocytopenia.
It works by stimulating the thrombopoietin receptor (TPO-R) on bone marrow cells, thereby promoting platelet production.
Eltrombopag is administered orally in tablet form and should be taken on an empty stomach, either 1 hour before or 2 hours after meals, as directed by a healthcare professional.
Common side effects include headache, nausea, fatigue, liver function abnormalities, and upper respiratory tract infections. Periodic monitoring of liver enzymes and platelet counts is recommended during treatment.
