Drug Class – Antineoplastic Agent / Tyrosine Kinase Inhibitor (TKI)
Sunitinib is an oral chemotherapy drug used to treat renal cell carcinoma (RCC), gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST), and pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (pNETs).
It works by inhibiting multiple tyrosine kinases, including VEGFR and PDGFR, which slows tumor growth and blocks the formation of new blood vessels that supply cancer cells.
Sunitinib is administered orally in capsule form under medical supervision and may be used alone or in combination with other therapies.
Common side effects include fatigue, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, high blood pressure, hand-foot syndrome, and mouth sores.
Serious side effects can include heart problems, liver toxicity, bleeding, and severe infections.
