Mercaptopurine is an oral chemotherapy drug used in the treatment of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) and other hematologic malignancies.
It works by interfering with DNA and RNA synthesis in rapidly dividing cells, thereby inhibiting cancer cell growth and proliferation.
Mercaptopurine is administered orally in tablet form, usually once daily, under the supervision of an oncologist. The dosage is individualized based on patient response, disease type, and tolerance.
Common side effects include bone marrow suppression, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, liver toxicity, and loss of appetite. Regular monitoring of complete blood counts and liver function tests is essential during therapy.
